Hanato Sushi
About This Spot
Stepping into Hanato Sushi feels like being welcomed into a quiet family kitchen tucked away from Kyoto’s usual bustle. The space hums with calm warmth, where time moves a little slower, encouraging a moment to breathe and savor. Here, the rhythm isn't rushed, and every gesture—from the gentle preparation of sushi to the attentive smiles exchanged—creates an inviting atmosphere that lingers long after the meal ends.
This is the kind of place where the connection between food and people takes center stage. The subtle clink of ceramic bowls, the careful artistry of fresh nigiri presented with thoughtful simplicity, and the comforting warmth of miso soup evoke a sense of care rooted deeply in tradition. Tempura, crisp and light, complements the vibrant play of textures and flavors, while the occasional sweetness of a matcha dessert rounds out the experience gently, like a soft exhale at the end of a day.
What makes Hanato Sushi special isn’t just its craft—it’s the way the small, family-run kitchen quietly invites you into its world. The chefs and staff move with a natural kindness, making each visit feel like a shared secret among friends rather than a transactional meal. The little touches—like a playful salmon-shaped treat to finish the meal—remind you that this is a place where hospitality and heart live alongside every dish.
For those who seek an authentic pause from Kyoto’s well-trodden paths, Hanato Sushi becomes more than a restaurant; it’s an intimate moment of discovery, a space where the love of simple, honest food embraces you wholly and quietly. It’s here, in these gentle exchanges and fresh, delicate bites, where the true joy of a meal reveals itself.

Wow this sushi place is fantastic! English menu available. Authentic experience. And great food. Get off the tourist trail and come here.

Perfect spot for a fixed menu lunch. The best sushi I’ve had in Kyoto thus far. Tuna was perfect, fried tempura veggies and shrimp paired perfectly, and the miso soup was the best I’ve had. Definitely worth the stop.

Great place! One of the best sushi I've ever eaten. It's fresh and sooo delicious. The staff is very kind and friendly, I definitely recommend Hanato Sushi! They even gave us nigiri lollipops at the end :)

We had an amazing encounter eating here last week Friday. Food is fresh and tastes great. They had the best sea urchins we have tasted in Japan. This small family style sushi makes it feel like good home cooked meals. The chefs and server were so lovely and friendly. We laughed and talked for a while. Would love to come again. Highly recommended.

All 5 stars. This family owned sushi restaurant is very wholesome and welcoming! They are very attentive and caring towards their customers! I would definitely come back again and highly recommend it to everyone! They even gave me a very cute salmon nigiri shaped candy as I left. My experience here is definitely one of my highlights here in Kyoto. Thank you!

Delicious sushi, tempura, miso soup, and matcha dessert—an authentic Japanese experience with zero tourist vibes. The owner was super kind and even gave us sushi lollipops at the end, which was such a nice touch. Our server spoke excellent English and started a friendly conversation. They offer a fully vegetarian menu, which I loved. Definitely recommend this place—way better than the hyped tourist spots that often disappoint in taste!

I absolutely love this place! They are so nice and they have the best fish. I first came here in April and then again on a return trip in September. Even though I don’t know a lot of Japanese they’re kind enough to say I’m skilled. Anytime I’m in Kyoto I’ll be enjoying a meal here! Thank you! ジョン (the guy with the mustache) I really want those cups!!

Quite literally the best sushi we’ve had in Japan. They have a good variety and some things I’ve always wanted to try. Our server was very kind and friendly. And the owners are an adorable couple. Go here!
